Tom Kuns, Lorain barber, Clyde native: Subject of Elyria Chronicle “Dash”

Today - Sunday, January 24, 2009 - The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram features “The Dash Between” Dec. 20, 1941, when Tom Kuns was born in Sandusky, and Jan. 2, 2010, when the Lorain barber died at home of a heart attack at age 68.

Tom groomed the heads of many Lorain politicians, clergymen and children and could carry on conversations of interest to each of them. Politics became his favorite topic in recent years. (Click headline for more.)





Christine G. Darrington, 85, of Toledo, worked for Toledo schools

Christine G. Darrington, 85, of Toledo, Ohio, who died December 13, 2009, retired after more than 25 years of employment with the Toledo Board of Education.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, where she sang in the choir, was a class leader, Missionary Society member and Stewardess Board worker.

L. Bernadine Shilling, 77, of Bowling Green, taught for 40 years in Orrville schools

L. Bernadine Shilling, 77, of Bowling Green, Ohio, who taught in the Orrville schools for 40 years, died Friday, December 4, 2009.

She first taught at Orrville High School and later at Orrville Junior High.

Bernadine, whose maiden name was Hill, was born in Malta, Ohio, where she graduated from Malta-McConnelsville High School in 1950. She received a bachelor of music education degree from Otterbein College in 1954 and later earned a post-graduate degree from Ohio University.

She married Fred Shilling on June 19, 1955, in Malta. Fred died August 10, 2006.

Geraldine B. “Judi” Weis, 75, of Edon, owned beauty shop and Standardbred horses

Geraldine B. “Judi” Weis, 75, of Edon, Ohio, who died Thursday, November 26, 2009, operated Judi’s Beauty Shoppe from 1958 until her retirement in 1997.

She helped organize the Bryan Chapter of the Ohio National Hairdressers of America and held the office of secretary-treasurer for two years.

Judi also owned Standardbred horses and belonged to the United States Trotting Association and in the Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan Racing Associations.

While living in Montpelier, Ohio, she served as president of the Eagle Creek Garden Club, which started the beautification garden at the edge of Moore Baseball Park in the village.





Ray A. Linder, 87, of Fremont, owned Linder’s Barber Shop

Ray A. Linder, 87, of Fremont, Ohio, who died Tuesday, November 24, 2009, owned Linder’s Barber Shop until retiring in July of 1987.

He delivered meals for 21 years for Memorial Hospital Mobile Meals and was a driver for the Bauman Auto Group,.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.services Monday, November 30, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church, 705 W. State St., Fremont.





Douglas Darr Arnold, 79, of Edgerton, Aro retiree, co-director of Bryan VFW drum & drill team

Douglas Darr Arnold, 79, of Edgerton, Ohio, who died Saturday, November 14, 2009, worked at The Aro Corporation in Bryan, Ohio, for 41 years before retiring in 1991.

Doug was well-known for his industrial photography. He was co-director of the Bryan V.F.W. Veterettes Drum & Drill Team, which won several national championships.

Merle J. Imm, 84, of Edgerton, Ohio, who co-owned the former Imm Tractor Sales and later White farm machinery, died Friday, November 13, 2009.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2009, at Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton.





Henry F. zumFelde, 91, Fulton County Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee

Henry F. zumFelde, 91, a Fulton County Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee, Northwest Ohio Guernsey Breeders president and first president of the Wauseon Rotary Club, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Henry worked for the Ohio Turnpike for 26 years and retired in 1981 as the Western District dupervisor for toll collectors.

He and his family raised champion Guernsey cows near Wauseon, Ohio, where they farmed from 1934 until 1970.

Henry also worked as a Fulton County auditor from 1951-55, served as a livestock judge at county fairs for many years and was a member of the York Township Board of Education.

In May 2009, he had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the opening of the new Biddle Park ball diamonds.
